- How will hypertext affect society?
- ==================================
-
- Hypertext can transmit knowledge. This has significant implications if you
- consider the characteristics of good hypertext. For example, good hypertext:
-
- - matches understanding or language of user (beginner to expert)
- - delivers needed information with a minimum of keystrokes
- - reaffirms the user's understanding of the larger field of knowledge
-
- Given these capabilities, beginners can achieve expert-level understanding
- in a field of knowledge through usage of the system. This implies that we
- don't need as many experts if hypertext systems can create expertise.
-
- The consequences may be <FILE45 SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES>:
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ - lower salaries for people with expert-level knowledge │
- │ - lower prices of expert-level information │
- │ - reduced needs for expert-level knowledge │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- Why? Well, good hypertext can convert information:
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ from a specialty good -- hard to acquire, expensive, │
- │ and custom created │
- │ │
- │ into a commodity good -- mass-produced, readily │
- │ availability, self-selected │
- │ <FILE29 COMMODITY INFORMATION> │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- This is called "the democratization of information."
-
- Consider this. The conflicts of political ideals (between imperial,
- democratic, marxist, and fascist approaches) also exist in the lands of
- information. For example:
-
- Who controls the contents and access to information?
-
- Should private ownership of information (i.e. copyrights) exist?
-
- Your answers identify your information philosophy (anarchist to communist)
- to a world where knowledge adds or creates value.
